Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Hasselbeck debate abortion and religion

Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck are on opposite sides when it comes to God’s stance on abortion.

During Wednesday’s episode of “The View,” the host and guest host were reacting to Kansas’ decision Tuesday to uphold the right to an abortion in the nation’s first test vote on abortion access since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

A state constitutional amendment on the primary ballot would have declared that there is no right to an abortion in Kansas, even though that right was protected in a state Supreme Court ruling in 2019. Abortion access is heavily restricted under Kansas law, with a 22- week ban, 24-hour waiting period and mandatory ultrasound in place, among other provisions.

Hasselbeck argued that as a Christian, she believes “our creator assigns value to life and that those lives have plan and purpose over them as designed by God that are not limited to the circumstances of conception, nor the situations they’re born into.”

Goldberg countered that God gave women “freedom of choice” and “made us smart enough to know when it wasn’t going to work for us. That’s the beauty of giving us freedom of choice.”

Imploring a Bible verse, Goldberg added that she does not judge people who have an abortion because she was taught: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Hasselbeck responded, “I don’t believe in giving women half the information out there.” She went on to encourage adoption and have pregnant people look into nonprofit agencies “that wrap around women that might not be able to care for the baby once born.”

Hasselbeck was a full time co-host on “The View” from 2003 until she left the show in 2013. Later in her 2019 book, “Point of View: A Fresh Look at Work, Faith, and Freedom,” she wrote an ABC The exec informed her that her contract would not be renewed and explained that they were “going in a less political direction.” Hasselbeck was a conservative voice on the show and returned Wednesday as a guest host.

Whoopi Goldberg discussed Christianity and abortion on "The View" amid post-Roe v. Wade overturned legislation.

Sara Haines also entered the discussion Wednesday on Christianity’s role in the pro-life debate and said the framing is an “overstep of one religion onto other people.”

“One thing I did read in the Bible that was enforced over and over and over is, ‘Thou shall not judge.’ You will have your judgment day,” Haines expressed. “I trust an individual to have their chance at life to make the decision they want and they will meet their maker.”

Co-host Joy Behar later voiced that adoption may not be the best option either, as the system is already burgeoning. “There are 117,000 children waiting to be adopted right now, so it’s not such a snap thing, ‘I’ll have the baby and it will be put up for adoption,'” she said.

Haines tacked onto Behar’s argument, adding that some adopted babies “get turned into a social system that fails them.”

Stars spoke out for abortion rights. It didn’t save Roe v. Wade. What was the point?
