“I can’t speak anymore, I’m going through hell / I don’t see right; I don’t feel well. / I look at these disgusting people / I point, but it’s evil by nature. ” Waves spend a little time addressing the sad state of the world at Thru Hell, the amazing opening of the seventh studio album, Hideaway. There’s, as always, indifference with the garage-pop heroes in San Diego, as the blurry words are replaced by a battle fuzz, making everything look more beautiful.

This album defines the spiritual return home not in one way, but in many ways. When the world was locked up last year, frontman Nathan Williams went to his parents ’house to write this full-length record in this small garden shed, where he wrote his first original material. It was also the first album since he said goodbye to the first Warner in 2017 with the legendary Fat Possum label, noting that Williams was disappointed in the statement: It was anarchy. No one knew what they were doing. Basic shortcuts can’t help you, but at the same time they can help, but that’s over time. ”

The restored independence seems to have paid off immediately, the results being as organic as the excitement. The fuzzy waltz of the track “Hideaway” dreams of Williams, “I will do my best to avoid all the atrocities that are haunting me.” The rage of a teenager who added this group to the map in the early 10s is always present, but the songwriter seems more mature with colorful lyrics: “The field looks very nice, but is covered with mines. ”

Such creative freedom was also promoted by the producer Dave Sitek of TV on the radio, Associated with Williams Johnny Cash deep cut and tonic darkness. This nuance cuts through “Sinking Feeling,” where the band’s previous abrasive qualities are clearly designed for guitar flutes that complement the vocals. “Guilty” also runs into the illegal land with the genre’s glorious days and a mixed rhythm section to burn the country. Waylon Jennings would have proudly called it his own.

Just over 10 years into his career, this album is Wavves’s most original and most diverse work. The flagship qualities we love in the band are always green – from these melodic pop-rock reefs to the vocal whirlpool of youth – that easily captures the restless frustrations of the world once again. But now with the freedom to focus on new creative paths, Williams has created one of their best albums to date, which is a comfortable climb to this game.
