It was a historic night of theft and saving at The Voice.
Monday’s episode of the NBC song contest marked the first fight of the season, and the gloves were off. Both the contestants and the coaches shook hands. But first, the honorary coaches gave friendly advice to Ariana Grande.
“This is your first time fighting, so you need to save and use your stealth wisely,” John Legend said. “That’s the hardest part of what we’re doing … get ready to cry.”
“I’m ready to see your guys,” Blake Shelton quipped.
How it works: Each coach pairs two singers on their team and duets the song chosen by the coach. Then the singers fight and only one is declared the winner. In this round, each coach has one rescue and one theft. (More on this later.)
On the Voice last week: Kelly Clarkson is “emotional” about the singer who lost her mother
Grande’s 22-year-old Bella DeNapoli and 35-year-old Katie Rae went to the ring for the first start of the night to perform Barbra Streisand and Donna Joser’s “No More Tears (Enough Enough)” story.
There was, despite the name of the song a lot tears. The duo not only made Team Grande advisor Kristin Chehenet cry, but filled Grande with tears. It was a chain reaction. Seeing Grande crying, Clarkson cried, “Stop how your voice breaks when you cry.”
“I don’t want to give in to extreme emotions, but I love you both so much,” Grande cried. “This song means a lot to me. My mom and I always sing it in the car and it was so special to hear it. I’m proud of both of you.”
Then came something that warned everyone Grande: choosing a winner. “I hate it so much,” Grande said. “I talked to my therapist about it.”
She defeated Rae, but quickly took advantage of the rescue of her “Italian sister” in a fight round in DeNapoli.
No other coach tried to steal DeNapoli from Granada that night. “We can’t steal right now, you’re crying,” Clarkson said. “We’re not heartless.”
‘Voice’: Kelly Clarkson was trained by Blake Shelton and Ariana Grande’s new drinking game
Shelton was clear there were no tears left from crying. For the first time, he comforted the coach with a box of tissue.
“You won’t need it anymore after this season,” Shelton added. “You will overcome it all. You will be a runner like us.” “That’s a good sign,” Clarkson added.
“I’m married now, I’m soft,” Shelton said after meeting former Voice coach Gwen Stephanie.
But Shelton proved that cold coaches are heavyweight after Clarkson’s 35-year-old Kinsey Rose and 21-year-old brothers Bekah, 24-year-old Joshua and 24-year-old Caleb deserved a “four microphone drop”. 26. Singers performed the Eagles’ “Seven Bridge Roads.”
Clarkson called a girl named Tom a winner because of “family harmony” and he quickly hit the save button for Rose, who wanted to stay on the “team”.
He was not alone. Legend, Shelton, and Grande each hit their own steal button, making the participant achieve three thefts and a save for the first time in the “Voice” battle phase.
“For the first time in the history of this sound, we had four buttons pressed in‘ battles ’and that shows you the power of Kinsey’s voice,” Shelton said, likening it to a car crash to win over Rose.
“If you get out of a horrible car accident and look back,“ Wow, I’ll never do that again, ”Shelton said.“ (Clarkson) was the man who drove the other car. It’s your turn to avoid this tragedy. “
Grande replied, “Are we saying choosing Kelly Clarkson is like a car accident?”
Rose ended up staying with Clarkson, who performed her winning dance: “I’m so happy. All the thefts in the world couldn’t get her out of my hands.”
Shelton soon realized that his field itself was a disaster. “It probably didn’t help, I’m talking about a car accident,” he thought. “It turned into a self-destruction.”
The fight rounds will continue on Tuesday on The Voice (NBC, 8 EDT / PDT).
