As airlines continue to struggle with interruptions and severe winter storms related to the Omicron option, the number of U.S. flight cancellations over the 12-day period exceeded 1,000 on Thursday.

More than 1,500 flights within and outside the United States were canceled on Thursday morning, according to FlightAware. About 900 U.S. flights have been delayed.

The chaotic line began on Christmas Eve, as the highly contagious Omicron variant resulted in an updated increase in COVID-19 cases and effects. Airlines reported crew shortages during the climb.

But the Omicron option is just one concern for airlines. Severe winter weather along the Midwest and East Coast has also led to widespread disruptions in recent days.

Southwest Airlines canceled 539 flights on Thursday morning, or 18 percent of its scheduled daily schedule. In the initial trading, the company’s shares were flat.

United Airlines canceled 217 flights, or 10 percent of its daily schedule. Alaska Airlines has canceled 110 flights, which is 15 percent of the plan. Delta Air Lines canceled 36 flights and JetBlue canceled seven flights.

Travelers stranded at Terminal 4 at JFK Airport on January 3rd.

Flight interruptions may continue in the coming days. Airlines have already canceled more than 700 U.S. flights scheduled for Friday.

The data, released this week by the Los Angeles County Department of Health, provided a brief overview of how Omicron Airlines employees have been affected.

According to the latest county data, at least 71 employees of Los Angeles-based American Airlines have passed a positive test for COVID-19. There were 42 incidents at the JetBlue Airways terminal at Los Angeles International Airport and six at the Southwest Airlines terminal.
