On Tuesday, the National Hockey League kicked off the 2021-22 season. It is also the first year of a $ 1 billion media rights package with ESPN and Turner Sports.

Networks said the NHL dubbed ESPN an average of 884,000 viewers on Tuesday, and Turner drew nearly 669,500 viewers for Wednesday’s national slot. Both figures are higher than the NHL average in points over the last two seasons.

In ESPN’s first game, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2. According to ESPN, which uses measurements from research firm Nielsen, the game averaged 984,000 viewers on Tuesday and garnered more than a million viewers.

The Disney-owned network won the 2021 tournament in October 2001 at the NHL’s highest-scoring opening between the Penguins and the Colorado Avalanche. The 2001 opening attracted 927,000 viewers.

ESPN also debuted the Seattle Kraken franchise 4-3 in the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The game averaged 782,000 viewers and garnered more than a million viewers. The network noted that the ESPN + channel’s streaming performance was not included in the audience statistics.

For comparison, the first game of the NHL’s 2020-21 season opener averaged 972,000 viewers on the NBC sports network. The contest featured the Philadelphia Flyers and Penguins, making it NBCSN’s most-watched game of the regular season.

The Chicago Blackhawks in last season’s three-game series – games against Lightning and Avalanche against St. Louis Blues. Combined TV averaged 774,000 viewers, up from 600,000 last season.

The NHL ended its 16-year partnership with NBC Sports and reached a $ 1 billion package with ESPN and Turner Sports in April last year.

On Wednesday, TNT released its two-headed national package and included several crossover appeals to it. On the net, NBA star commentator Charles Barkley took part in a show about Washington Capitals ’5-1 victory over the New York Rangers. The game averaged 817,000 spectators and drew 920,000 spectators from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 p.m.

In the competition, the star of the capital Alex Ovechkin scored two goals and rose to fifth place of all time. Ovechkin, 36, has scored 732 goals and needs another 163 goals to bring Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record to 894. TNT said it averaged 522,000 viewers in the second round, which saw the Blackhawks defeat 4-2.

In the advertising industry, EDO Measurements has identified a car category that accounts for 15.4% of advertising spending for NHL openers this season. Restaurants spent 12.9% and insurance spent 11.9% on advertising. EDO has launched a search for Apple ads. This is an indicator that the company uses to measure the online search activity of brands within minutes after TV commercials.
