ATLANTA – Wednesday night, the Mets were not only covered in blood, but they could have hit right.
The struggle to complete the first rotation intensified as David Peterson came off the hill, ending a brutal game with the coach in the fourth inning. His left arm came out with pain in his right side and added an insulting injury when he lost 20-2 to the Braves at Truist Park.
Although Peterson has struggled for most of the season – his ERA has risen to 5.40, allowing him to run five times in eight hits and one run three times – the Mets are already trying to survive with razor-sharp rotation depth.
Among the missing pieces are Carlos Carrasco, Noah Sindergaard, Joey Luchchesi and Jordan Yamamoto, who recently landed a spin with new player Thioror Megill. If Peterson needs a list of injuries, the Mets may have to dig deeper and maybe he should go to Corey Oswalt, who looks sharp in a long relief role, or maybe he should go to relief and test Thomas Szapucki, who has six jobs . 3 ² / ₃ inning in his Premier League debut. Junior Albert Almora was called up to the center of the field in the eighth inning and was allowed more than two-thirds of the three shots. The Mets started the night differently from the plus 16. They finished it in minus two.
The game turned into an escape in the fourth, when the Braves scored seven times. Much of the damage to the injured Reed-Fuli is an additional relief added to the list of those who lost their breadwinner after the death of their grandmother with Marcus Stroman this week. Reid-Foley recorded one and allowed five runs and one walk in five hits.
The Mets have lost 10 of their last 16 games and have not been able to use them since winning Tuesday night. Their NL East lead has shrunk to two games as the Citizens continue to grow sharply.
Pete Alonso, who played twice in his first game against Max Fried, led the Mets in the right direction, but it all came down from there.
Peterson offered the Mets three straight games after a clinker in Baltimore three weeks ago, but jumped from the start. Little Ronald Acuna blew up a homer who was leading the game for the Braves and scored for the second time in Ozzie Albies ’RBI single before the end of the inning.
Austin Riley presented a double single in the third, which gave the Braves a 4-2 lead. Peterson had beaten Acuna to start the inning, but then Freddie Freeman walked in and handed the second to Albies, who had stolen it.
In the fourth, Kevan Smith presented the RBI single behind Abraham Almonte’s lead double. Then manager Luis Roxas, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and coach Brian Chiclo stepped off the bat and Peterson was removed.
The Mets will have a chance to win this series on Thursday, when Ats Jacob deGrom is scheduled to start. Taijuan Walker and Stroman then clashed with the Yankees in the Metro series, with new starter Megill scheduled for Sunday night. If Peterson can’t make it to the field on Monday, the most likely candidate against the breweries is right-back Oswalt, who has allowed relief to exceed 6 ¹ / over since he returned to the Premier League roster.
