Officials say San Antonio police in Texas killed a man who opened fire on a local news group shortly after they opened fire on them on Monday morning.

During a subsequent press conference, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus responded to reports that police had opened fire on a television group on Noria Street near S. Navidad Street, where they found an unknown suspect. The shooter ran to a nearby house where he is believed to have recognized people.

Police were able to evacuate residents, McManus said, and the suspect stepped out the back door and stayed inside before moving into the property’s air-conditioned shed.

As the officers were moving, the suspect saw them “in front of the screen door [and] “They started firing at them,” McManus said. Five officers opened fire and eventually hit the gunman to death, “he said.

The officers were in the police force for five to 18 years, McManus said. All of them were transferred to an administrative position until they were considered by the district attorney.

“We didn’t want to involve the individual,” McManus said. “It was a plan to get him out of the house, to make it easier for us to catch him. But he saw the officers at the door, [and] started shooting at them from the door.

According to the local branch, police had previously been called home for another report of the shooting Acesparks 29. But McManus said police had “no reason to get an order at the time and no reason to make an arrest.”

That same Saturday, a man believed to be the same man threw his weapon into the air, McManus said. San Antonio police deployed a secret crew to the area to monitor Dertment’s home, but they eventually determined he was not there.

McManus said the suspect had a criminal history but did not provide specific details.
