Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the new voting reforms in his state will make voting easier and safer at the same time.
Electoral security is one of many topics to be discussed at a special session of the Texas legislature, Abbott, which began Thursday.

“Even Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives agree that improving mail in the voting system is a way to ensure election integrity,” said Chris Wallace, head of Acesparks Sunday, who spoke on Acesparks Sunday. “So that’s what Texas is doing – we’re making it easier to vote by adding more hours to early voting than under current law, and we’re also making it harder to cheat with the mail on the ballot.”
Texas is considering new voting laws after the Supreme Court ruled that security measures in the Arizona election – including a ban on ballot collection – were legal. Abbott said one-third of the ballots collected by others and the ballots submitted by them pose a major threat to the integrity of the election.
Abbott said a federal judge appointed by former President Barack Obama said vote fraud was a problem and that federal prosecutors had investigated and prosecuted a case where someone tried to use cocaine to buy ballots.

Other topics to be discussed during the special session include border security, transgender student athletes, and critical racing theory. Democrats say the state power grid, which was damaged last winter, is not on the agenda.
Abbott noted that the power grid is not on the agenda because it has been adequately addressed by the measures taken in the regular session. He said all topics of the special session were on the agenda for the next session and were “close to the finish line” until Democrats left to block voting reforms.
