The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office said Rice bullpen catcher Jan Ramires, who died earlier this week, died as a result of suicide.
His body was found in a field near his family home in Fort Worth, Texas, according to the Tampa Bay Times. He was 28 years old.
Ramires spent three years in Rice’s small league system until his release in 2018. He rejoined the team a year later, a position he held until his passing.
Ramires’ family shared a statement after the announcement:
“The loss of our son was the hardest experience we have ever had. Unfortunately, we sometimes don’t see the characters. Fighting in silence is not good. It is our responsibility to respect our son’s life by helping other families. No parent should tolerate the loss of a child, ”the statement said.
“We are very grateful for the kindness and support of the Tampa Bay Rice, which we consider our family. Our son felt the love of all of you. Thank you to our family, friends and everyone far and near for their love and support. God bless you! Rays in the sky. “
