Singer-songwriter / actor sat down with for a Big Read cover interview this week talked about it Years and YearsThe third album inspired by the 80s “Night call” (today, January 21).
Starting in 2018 “Lignum vitae”the new record is the first full-length record since Alexander said goodbye to his former friends in the Y&Y group, Mike Goldsworth and Emre Turkmen.
“We could never agree on what we liked in music and in what direction we wanted to go, which made the songwriting process difficult,” the singer said. from experience working as a trio.
“It was never a lyrics; [Goldsworthy and Türkmen] never touches the lyrics. It was just a general line: there would be some kind of “poppy” thing. Pop was like a dirty world, it was a little crazy.
However, Alexander admitted that “discussions on music can help you do something really good, and I think that’s what happened to us”. He added: “I love all the music we create, but it has always come with its own complications.”
While not involved in the creative / writing process this time around, Goldsworthy will be touring as part of the live band Years & Years. Alexander says the meeting won’t be “weird” but rather “like your brother is back”.
“Mike is the best guy on the road because he just plays Switch and plays with the guys,” he said. Before thinking about the “big changes” of going alone on a “night call”.
“You get some kind of attitude when you’re in a group,” Alexander said . “I mean, I’m still in a relationship with these people, but now it’s all different. It was like a divorce, then you have to talk about it in interviews.
