Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The Edmonton Oilers are in deep trouble in a playoff series they were expected to win.

After dropping Games 4 and 5, the Oilers now trail the Kings, 3-2, as the best-of-7 series shifts back to Los Angeles for an elimination game. It was not supposed to be like this – these Oilers were supposed to be different – but here we are, the vultures are circling.

What’s most discouraging for the Oilers is that a lot of the strong predictive metrics they were posting in the second half of the regular season have vanished in this series. The Kings and Oilers have split the goals at 5-on-5, while the expected goals and high-danger scoring chances are only slightly favor the Oilers. It’s been an impressive showing from a scrappy underdog.

And while it’s hard not to get caught up in the way Los Angeles has played, the big picture for Edmonton is still hard to ignore. The Oilers played at a 119-point pace in 38 games under new head coach Jay Woodcroft and their underlying metrics were superb.

It’s also hard to ignore how well Mike Smith has played in goal for Edmonton. Prior to the series, if someone told you that Edmonton would be down, 3-2, after five games, you probably would have assumed that Smith stumbled. That’s been the case for prior postseason failings for the Oilers – the team has played well enough, but the goaltending let them down. The opposite has been true in this matchup.

Through five games, Smith has posted a .930 save percentage and a +7.7 Goals Saved Above Expected, which is the best mark among all postseason goaltenders. You could make an argument that Smith has been the best goalie in the playoffs, even with his team down 3-2.

With the goaltending they’re getting from Smith, the Edmonton Oilers should be a Stanley Cup contender – let alone win a series as significant favorites over a scrappy underdog.

Even with their underwhelming play and the loss of Darnell Nurse for Game 6, the Oilers are deserving of their status as -140 favorites on the road on Thursday night, but instead of laying the -140 in Los Angeles, bettors should instead look towards the series line and back Edmonton to win the next two contests.

The fangs will be out if Edmonton drops Game 6 and bows out of the postseason in unceremonious fashion once again, but bettors should do their best to avoid getting caught up in that hype. Trust the long-term form of the Oilers to come back and take this series in seven.

The Bet: Oilers to win the series +150
