Lionel Richie’s huge catalog will be remembered when the R & B-pop superstar was honored as the next winner of the Library of Congress Gershwin Award for the popular song.

Richie’s song list – both as a soloist and with The Commodores – is huge, from “Endless Love” to “All Night Long” to “Hello” to “Truly,” with record sales more than 125 million worldwide. His participation in the creation of the 1986 Grammy Award-winning film We Are the World for Benefiting Africa for the United States is another part of his eternal legacy.

Richie’s accomplishments will be celebrated on March 9 in Washington (Columbia County) with an all-star concert; the show PBS will air nationwide on May 17 (9 EDT / PDT; check local lists).

“It’s truly a lifelong honor and I’m so grateful to have received the Gershwin Award for the popular song,” Richie, 72, said in a statement. “I’m proud to have joined all the previous artists, I admire them too and I’m a fan of their music.”

Previous recipients include Billy Joel, Gart Brooks, Tony Bennett, Carol King, Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.

The Gershwin Prize is awarded to a team of legendary songwriters by George and Ira Gershwin in recognition of the live music artist’s achievements in promoting the song genre. The award is chosen by the Library of Congress in consultation with the board of scholars, producers, and executives. songwriters and other music experts.

Congress librarian Carla Hayden pointed to the unifying feature of Richie’s music. “Even when we have problems and disagreements over issues, songs can show us our commonalities,” he said in a statement.

Lionel Richie has sold more than 125 million albums during his career as a solo artist and with The Commodores.

In addition to his musical career, Richie is preparing for his fifth season as a judge on ABC’s American Idol show, which returns on February 27th.

The Gershwin Award is another on the growing list of accolades for Tuskegi in Alabama. The four-time Grammy winner also won an Oscar (for the best original song for “Say You, Say Me” in 1986) and was named MusiCares Man of the Year in 2016 and Kennedy Center Veteran in 2017.
