Tennessee law enforcement officers shot and killed a man walking with a box cutter after a 30-minute confrontation in one of the major interstate states on Thursday afternoon.
WKRN quoted police as saying that the fatal collision occurred after a State Road Patrol officer, 37-year-old Landon Step, saw him sitting on a barrier on Interstate 65 in Nashville, WKRN reported, citing police. .
When law enforcement tried to talk to Eastep, he “walked away from the soldier and developed a box cutter,” said Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Metro Nashville Police Department.
The soldier called for a reserve – and many officers from the three agencies worked for about half an hour to aggravate the situation.
According to Aaron, nine officers opened fire when Eastep quickly snatched an unknown “silver, shiny cylindrical item” from his right pocket.
Eastep was hit several times and died at a local hospital.
Witness video Retrieved by WSMV captured the confrontation and the officers fired after Eastep raised his hand.
It’s not clear what Eastep took out of his pocket, but Aaron confirmed that it wasn’t a shotgun.
The shooting is being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
