By Chris Williams: Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman says he wants to challenge Terence Crawford or his WBO welterweight title in October, but he wants promoter Bob Arum out of the picture for that to happen.
Former WBA/WBC welterweight champion Thurman (29-1, 22 KOs) hasn’t fought in two years since losing his WBA strap to Manny Pacquiao in 2017.
Not surprisingly, Thurman has no interest in working back into the world title, the way normal fighters are shot.
Thurman isn’t adjusting well to being a contestant, as he still thinks he’s calling the shots. Her request that Crawford leave Arum before fighting her seems like magical thinking.
‘One Time’ Thurman wants a world title shot to fall gravity onto his lap like an apple falling from a tree. Thurman doesn’t want to work for it. He wants the title shot to be given to him passively, but unfortunately, he is not in a position to do so.
Thurman Still Thinks He’s Calling the Shots
“I like big fights; I really do. I don’t hate a big fight and a big challenge. That’s what I win in this game,” Keith Thurman told FightHype. “So for me, I have a lot oft is concerned with getting Bob getting [Arum] out of the picture.
“So my thought in the first year, Bob, I’m not a big fan of his. Crawford really needs to get away from this. Man. [Arum] Doesn’t even give credit to his fighters.
“Do you know what I mean? What kind of promoter is he? He’s above the fighters who made his entire industry. You have to give respect where respect is due.
“He does not respect his own fighters. That’s why I’m not interested. I am very interested in Crawford. I’m interested in the biggest of the 147s,” Thurman said.
Keith will need to put up a fight with Crawford anyway and stop setting up the conditions for the fight to take place. Thurman is not in a position to shoot. So if he wants a fight, he has to fight Crawford while he is still with Arum or not.
if Thurman wants $10 million for Crawford fight, he needs to forget that idea too. If Thurman is lucky, he could get $4 million, but it’s more realistic for him to get $2 million.
Crawford’s contract with Arum’s top-ranked promotional company is due to expire in October, but there’s no guarantee he’ll leave her.
For Crawford, 33, to leave Arum, she has to believe the grass will be greener elsewhere with PBC, Matchroom Boxing, or Golden Boy promotions.
But Arum’s fear of how he lost enough money in the fight to buy Crawford’s house? Beverly Hills, California, he must have been scared off by any potential taker. as the saying goes, ‘Whatever shines is not gold.’
Yes, Crawford has excellent boxing skills, but she isn’t great at promoting her fights, and her style in the ring intimidates the big names.
Crawford is a switch-hitting southpaw counter-puncher who has excellent maneuverability and has good punching power.
If you’re a promoter of another fighter, the last thing you want to do is let your guy fight a guy like Crawford, especially when money isn’t going to change lives.
Keith wants Crawford fight in October
Thurman said, “It’s Thurman versus everyone who fights best on 147.” “i’m definitely interested in it [fight with Crawford], but you gotta get Bob out of the picture.
“If that means October or sometime later this year, we can start talking about the Crawford fight,” Thurman said.
It’s not realistic that Thurman would get a title shot against Crawford, given his requirements for that to happen. However, if Thurman gets off his high horse and feels that he is no longer in a position to speak fully, he may have a chance to have a fight with ‘Bud’ Crawford.
But even so, Thurman would reportedly need to accept less than $10 million to fight Crawford.
Thurman is getting old, and he looks much older than his chronological age of 32. In the two years that Thurman lost while sitting on his back on the sofa, it didn’t help his sales.
