Charles Oliveira will have to move mountains to convince Justin Getty that he is the real deal, as The Highlight has yet to be sold in the Do Bronx before his fight with Dustin Poirye in Brazil at UFC 269.
Gaetje admits that Oliveira was the lightweight champion, but proves that she won the UFC 262 tournament against Michael Chandler by technical knockout.
But that’s exactly what Getty thinks.
“Great fights, but not championship-level contenders,” said Getty Oliveira’s nine fight victories without a UFC filter.h / t MMA fight). “It’s just like that. Hey, he has a belt, he can tell me to push. That’s what I would have said, that’s exactly what he said – I would have told him to shake his ass and win eight in a row.”
“I’m in a great position, I don’t have to win eight in a row. I have to win one after another. If he won, I would fight Charles Oliveira because I’ll show you what I’m saying. He is a smoker. He is an abandoned man. He showed it to you at the Michael Chandler Battle. At the end of the first round, he didn’t look good, didn’t want to be there. He doesn’t want to be there when he’s unattractive. That’s what I thought, that’s my opinion. Poire wants to beat him. “
Gateji has discredited Oliveira’s win over Tony Ferguson and wonders why Poire will win and lose the championship title on December 11th.
“It’s a very interesting meeting. I really like Poire,” Getty said.
“[Oliveira] he’s a great fighter – he’s a great fighter – but he doesn’t have the ability to knock you to the ground. In the south-west of Poir, it’s always funny when you look south-west. It’s a little different, you don’t see them very often. [Poirier] works very well in the control range. Oliveira is not Habib [Nurmagomedov] – he doesn’t walk forward and doesn’t walk across things to cover that distance. He really needs you to choose to knock him down or buy him a fight. He has a few good accomplishments and I think that’s the only time he can bring people down. That’s why I don’t see Poire so much in the championship.
“I don’t know Oliveira very well yet and I have a lot to gain from that,” he added. “He had eight fights [wins] backstroke, but at the end of the day, Tony Ferguson was the best win in this backstroke and I got him straight from hell in 24 minutes 15 seconds. And I didn’t break it [Ferguson], it’s not over – it’s my friend – a friend in its own right, so it never breaks – but there’s a certain way to deal with this person, I’ve shown you how to do it. So this win isn’t that great — and it’s not like when I beat him, he won 12 fights. After that, it’s not great, and I think so. “
Getty will return to the Octagon on Nov. 6 to fight Chandler at UFC 268 at Madison Square Garden Arena in New York City. Meanwhile, Oliveira is expected to defend her title against Poirier in the main event of UFC 269 on December 11th.
