Former UFC heavyweight champions are no strangers to pro-wrestling. Oddly enough, 10 of the 17 former heavyweight champions have competed in at least one pro-wrestling bout. Junior dos Santos is on the verge of 11th place.
Dos Santos, who was released by the UFC in March, recently featured in All Elite Wrestling with former champion Andrei Arlovsky as part of Dan Lambert’s American Top Team crew. He was physically active for the first time last week, jumping into the ring to beat members of Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle Stadium (including Bellator heavyweight Jake Hager). And he will make his official debut this Friday in a six-man game at the AEW Rampage.
Last week, He told ESPN how happy he was to enter the new world:
“I really liked it. It’s very different from MMA, but just as exciting. The reactions from the fans are amazing. I’m so excited and looking forward to kicking Jericho and Hager’s ass next week.”
Not everyone liked his hit “Inner Circle” on last week’s “Dynamite” series. Jim Cornett, a wrestler who has been in business for 40 years and has regularly expressed controversial or contentious opinions in the process, was not a fan of the JDS case. He shared his thoughts on things in his podcast (Written by Sportskeeda):
“The problem is that Junior Dos Santos is one of the main names in mixed martial arts, if he doesn’t do any physical work. People know he’s a world-class rich man, but because he can’t work, he goes in here and never meets Sammy (Guevara). gave you land and pounds for no reason. Then you revealed that Junior Dos Santos can’t do the royal job, but he’s trying, so he’s a liar. … ”Until people see him lying, he thinks he’s real . They saw him lying here because he can’t work. “
Still, Cornet often criticizes things for focusing on herself. It’s hard to assess a man’s potential based on a single run and multiple work shots. But we’ll have to see what happens when Dos Santos joins Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page on Friday and takes Guevara, Jericho and Hager on TNT.
Another highlight of MMA is that Jorge “Gambred” will be in the corner of Dos Santo for the Masvidal game.
