Speaking of red flags, Ronnie Specter’s sensational marriage to Phil Spectrum was their biggest and most reddish.

The elephant was charged in 2003 with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson and died in prison last year. But before he is charged with a heinous crime, the relationship between the producer and his teenage protege has been shattered by cruelty, patient control and wrapped love. And it eventually became a terrible harbinger of future violence.

60s Ronettes rock band bad girl vocalist Ronnie has died at the age of 78 after battling cancer. But in the years before his death, the musician first spoke openly about his damaged relationship with Phil, who signed for his band in 1963.

Phil and Ronnie Spector had a troubled marriage that included death threats. Yet, before his violent behavior sparked the sparks, their relationship evoked musical ingenuity.

Phil helps Ronnie and Ronettes succeed with hit songs like “My Baby” and “My Baby, I Love You” (both 1963), “The Best Part of Breakin ‘Up” and “Walking in the Rain” . ”(Both 1964). The couple married in 1968, and the Ronetts soon divorced.

Ronnie’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment from The Post.

Ronnie Spector
Phil and Ronnie Specters in Westwood, California, 1972.

In her 1990 memoir, “Be My Child: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and MAcesparksess,” Ronnie wrote that while she admired her ex-husband’s musical genius, she was vindictive, controlling, and violent.

In the book, he also mentions that he kept a golden coffin in the basement and said he would kill it if he tried to leave it.

“All I can say is that when I left in the early’ 70s, I knew I would die there if I didn’t leave at that time, ”he writes.

In the book, Phil details the imprisonment of him at his palace in California, where he subjected him to severe mental abuse. In 1972, with the help of his mother, he ran barefoot and barely escaped life.

Ronnie told People in 2018 about his mother’s support and the trials he went through: “He said,“ I’m your mother and I’m telling you, we have to get out of here. Or you, my daughter, will disappear. ”

Ronnie Spector
Ronnie Spector was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

“Love on the Roof” continued: “It was very dark in those days. Now I feel free to tell other women. Probably not every woman listens to me, but someone and I do [hope] I can get one or two to keep them [own] saves their lives or them from violence. “

As a result of their divorce in 1974, Phil took custody of his three adopted children – Donte Phillip and twins Louis and Gary. The writer-producer forced him to sign his life in a divorce agreement, depriving him of a future record income.

By that time, he had accused him of taking up arms and said he had threatened to hire an invader to kill him.

Fil Spector
Phil Spector brought fame to Ronettes after he signed them in 1963.

Decades after they divorced, Phil still felt that he had some control over Ronnie. In 2007, he led a campaign to prevent her from being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“You think he may have focused his attention on his murder trial,” the singer told The Post at the time.

All of the couple’s adopted children were reportedly abused and injured by the producer behind the Voice Wall recording technique. Donte Phillip said in an interview with the Mail on Sunday in 2003 that the trio had been insulted by Phil and described his relationship with him as “a fine line between love and hate”.

He also claimed that Phil had trapped him and his brothers in their bedrooms “with door locks”.

Fil Spector
Phil Spector is on trial in March 2009 for murder.

When the elephant finally died at the age of 81, Ronnie spoke of his death. “It’s a sad day for music and a sad day for me,” he wrote on social media at the time.

“When I worked with Phil Spector, when I watched him work in the recording studio, I knew I was working with the best. He controlled and controlled everything. There is so much to love in those days, ”he continued. “Meeting and falling in love with him was like a fairy tale. The magic music we can create together is inspired by our love. I loved him madly and gave him my heart and soul. ”

Ronnie added that perhaps at the low price of the century, even though his ex-wife was a “great producer,” he was a “bad guy”. He seemed reassured by the role he had played in his career.

“Unfortunately, Phil could not live and work outside the recording studio. Darkness has set in, and many people’s lives have been damaged. I still smile when I hear the music we did together and it happens. The music will last forever. “
