Legendary actress Stella Stevens, best known for her roles in films like The Poseidon Adventure, The Nutty Professor and Girls! Girls! Girls!, has died at the age of 84.
Stevens was born Estelle Caro Eggleston in Yazoo City, Mississippi in 1938. She began her career as a model, appearing in print and television ads, before making her film debut in 1961’s The Private Lives of Adam and Eve.
In 1972, Stevens starred alongside Gene Hackman in The Poseidon Adventure, playing one of the passengers on the doomed ocean liner. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in the Elvis Presley musicals Girls! Girls! Girls! and Viva Las Vegas.
In addition to her film roles, Stevens was a regular on television, appearing in shows like The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Murder, She Wrote and The Fall Guy. She also had a recurring role on the soap opera The Young and the Restless.
Stevens was married twice and had three children. She was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City in 1998.
Stevens’ death was announced on her official Facebook page, which said she passed away peacefully in her sleep. She will be remembered as a talented actress and a beloved friend to many.
