Airbnb’s competitors are tightening how visitors have access to keys after a horrific investigation into violent crimes committed in rented homes on the site.

Expedia’s Vrbo rental business now prohibits hosts from leaving keys in public places where the landlord “does not have an owner, business manager or employees”. site. Hosts that do not follow the rule may be banned from Vrbo.

However, TripAdvisor also intends to tighten its rules on how to transfer keys to visitors, Acesparks reported.

The news came two weeks after it was discovered that a 29-year-old Australian tourist had been raped in 2016 by an assailant who had somehow split the key at the knepepoint in Manhattan’s Airbnb rental.

The victim reportedly took the keys to rent at a nearby bodega without revealing who she was, raising questions about how many people were able to enter the apartment.

Two years after the incident, Airbnb paid the woman $ 7 million, which would prevent her from going to court or suing the company or landlord, Acesparks reports.

Airbnb spokesman Ben Braith said the company “requires all hosts to properly protect their lists and thus ensure that key exchanges are carried out safely and securely, based on the security policy in place since 2019.”

The company also requires hosts to change keyboard and lock codes between bookings, Breit said.

Vrbo, however, only “recommends hosts change the code,” the company said on its website.

TripAdvisor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
