Defunct children’s asylum reveals ‘experimental procedures’

This former institution is just as harrowing in decay.

An infamous site among urban explorers, this long-forsaken facility somewhere in the US was once used to subject minors to treatments now akin to torture. Although it’s no longer active, evidence of its disturbing past still litters the building, adding an ominous energy to a badly deteriorated, and spooky, space.

Recently, 24-year-old urban explorer and TikTok creator Gabby, who has 1.7 million followers, brought fresh virality to the asylum after posting a video of her visit with her boyfriend, 25-year-old Sonny. In order not to encourage further vandalism, she did not disclose the location.

“While making our way through the wards we entered one of the bathrooms which had a very old hydrotherapy tub which was used to provide hydrotherapy treatments to the patients at the facility,” Gabby says, according to Jam Press, adding that form of treatment exposed patients to extreme heat and cold.

The asylum is reportedly notorious within the urban explorer community, and retains disturbing relics of its dark past — such as colorful displays meant to act as calming agents.

“Horrific. People don’t realize it wasn’t long ago these were used, it’s within living memory,” commented one user, while another said, “The bad energy from this place.”

Many of the facility’s former patients were orphans or otherwise badly “neglected” children who, while at the asylum, were subjected to “experimental procedures” they did not consent to. Among the most disturbing details: the colorful remaining detail inside the facility, which was used to have a calming effect on patients.

On upper floors, Gabby and Sonny found light-filled surgical rooms and, in their floors, drains “where bodily fluids likely were washed down,” Gabby says. Downstairs, they discovered multiple dental units, now filled with “countless cave crickets” as well as patients’ clothing.

“Finally, we entered the morgue which consisted of four drawers to hold four bodies,” Gabby said. Next to the morgue, the room were autopsies were conducted. The base of the autopsy table remains.

The experience of exploring the facility — one clip of which has racked up more than 324,000 views for Gabby, who goes by @UrbexMuse on TikTok and has an interest in psychology, left her downcast.

“It was especially intense and saddening making our way through this facility knowing that countless children who were either orphans or considered ‘undesirable’ resided here,” she says. “I was most surprised by the dental units since I knew that historically multiple asylums and psychiatric centers would remove the teeth of patients who were known to be biters and were difficult to feed. Seeing those dental units here made me wonder if any of these patients faced the same fate.”
