Chris Colbert 130 Vs. Tugstsogt Nyyambayar 129.6

By Alan Fox: WBA Interim Super Featherweight Champion Chris Colbert (15-0, 6 KO) successfully weighed in, weighing in at 130 lbs on Friday over replacement rival Tugstogat Nyambayer (12-1, 9 KO). Nyambayer, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist, weighed 129.6 pounds.

New Yorker Colbert came in at just over 130.6 pounds in his first weigh-in effort on the scales. Colbert came back later, going into the dressing room, and he was able to successfully weigh 130 pounds.

He said he shaved his beard in the dressing room, and that was all he needed to get the weigh-in.

On Saturday night Colbert vs. Nyambayer will head to Showtime Boxing at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Colbert, 24, was originally supposed to face Yurirokis Gamboa, but he dropped out a week ago, making it necessary to bring in Nyambayer as a replacement.

Colbert has proven to be an excellent talker, and he has garnered a lot of attention this week with his remarks about Deontay Wilder.

As far as actual talent goes, in this writer’s opinion, Colbert is not as gifted as WBC Super Featherweight Champion Oscar Valdez, Shakur Stevenson, Jemel Herring or Miguel Berchelt.

Colbert is also not in the same league as some fighters on the 126 as well. If you put Colbert in with some featherweights like Gary Russell Jr., Emanuel Navarret and Ray Vargas, the wheels would be off his game.

With that said, Colbert has enough potential to beat King Tug on Saturday. As long as Colbert doesn’t get bitten, he should be fine.

When Colbert was being interviewed this week, I wouldn’t say I liked him and the way he was blinking his right eye. He’s starting to show a break from some of his recent battles with Jaime Arboleda and Jezreel Corrales.

Colbert’s lack of power forced him to delve deeper into both those feuds and those of his many others.

This is a problem for fighters who don’t have the same power as Colbert. They are forced to walk away to win their fights, causing them to suffer a lot of punishment that others can’t deal with.

Colbert is a good secondary champion, but he doesn’t pop in his punches to take him to the next level. He should use his speed and skill to outbox to beat King Tug on Saturday, but he is unlikely to be knocked out.

Colbert is predicting a knockout, but it’s not going to happen. If Colbert tries to score a knockout, he could catch one of Nyambayer’s heavy shots and be out.

Nayambayar has a clear advantage in punching power over Colbert hitting the light. But where Nayambayar lacks, it is in the speed of his hand. He is too slow to beat fast paced guys like Colbert and Gary Russell Jr.

Last year, Nyambayar challenged WBC 126-lb champion Gary Russell Jr. for his title and lost by a 12-round unanimous decision to a wide score.

Russell Jr. got off to a strong start, landing well and taking a big lead. However, in the second half of the fight, Nyambayar put up a good fight and made some big shots.

He didn’t try hard enough to climb back into the fight, but he made it interesting to watch nonetheless. King Tug made some good shots on Russell in that fight. I’m not sure Colbert can take them on like Russell did.

Despite Russell Jr. winning by 12-round decision, it was arguably his toughest fight since losing to Vasily Lomachenko in 2014.

King Tug has the power to win this fight on Saturday, but he must inflict something big on Colbert late in the fight after exhausting him.

Other loads on Saturday’s card:

Michelle Rivera 134.4 vs John Fernandez 135
