Emergency crews were called to Ushaw Moor, near Durham, on Saturday.

The youngster was rushed to hospital but could not be saved and was declared dead shortly after.

Police have now launched a probe into his death but have not released any further information.

It comes as forensic officers were seen going in and out of the property.

Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation with an increased police presence in the former pit village.

A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: “On Saturday, Durham Constabulary supported the North East Ambulance Service in attending a medical incident in Ushaw Moor.

“The incident involved a three-year-old boy, who sadly died later.

“We are involved in a multi-agency investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the child and the public will notice an increased police presence in the area over the coming days while inquiries are conducted”.
