Amazon discusses forming ‘Rebel Alliance’ against Microsoft

Amazon is reportedly trying to form a “rebel alliance” with other tech companies in an effort to take on Microsoft’s suite of work-productivity apps.

Amazon is in talks with Dropbox, Slack, Smartsheet and others to create a bundle of business apps that corporate customers can buy for the same price, Insider told, citing sources with knowledge of the talks.

The outlet said the bundle will also offer other features such as single sign-on and unified billing through the Amazon Web Services cloud platform.

The initiative is reportedly called the “Rebel Alliance” inside AWS—the same name used by resistance groups in the “Star Wars” movies when they align to fight the evil Galactic Empire.

According to Insider, discussions have been going on for more than a year, but efforts are still on at the idea stage.

The insider reported that Andy Jesse, the current AWS CEO who is set to become Amazon CEO next week after Jeff Bezos steps down, has yet to sign the alliance and has repeatedly called on the team to strengthen the pitch. sent back.

It’s unclear whether incoming AWS CEO Adam Selipsky is interested, or if any meaningful discussions are still ongoing, the report said.

An Amazon representative did not immediately return the Post’s request for comment.

The plan will help Amazon and other software companies compete with Microsoft’s prolific 365 suite of products, which include word processing, spreadsheets, team messaging and more.

It will also cater to companies that prefer to purchase different business apps as needed – as a “best of breed” approach rather than as a package from a single vendor.

Insider reported that with this initiative, Amazon has the opportunity to move beyond AWS’s core operations of cloud infrastructure and software-as-a-service offerings — an area the company is struggling with.

The alliance will also help keep AWS away from Microsoft, which is increasingly moving into the cloud space, the outlet said, citing a person familiar with the project.

Revenue from Microsoft Azure, its cloud business, has grown exponentially, and Microsoft may decide to bundle it with the Microsoft Office products that AWS insiders often discuss, according to the report.

“Amazon says it’s not competitive-focused — but every meeting was about Microsoft, Microsoft, Microsoft,” one person told Insider.
